Covid would have almost made us forget it, but the flu causes 9,000 deaths on average each year in France. And this season, it is wreaking havoc on many of our neighbors. In Italy, where the peak might have been reached at the end of December, the number of people diagnosed with influenza-like illness has been unprecedented for at least fifteen years. Influenza viruses, increasingly detected, are largely responsible. In Spain too, where the mask became compulsory once more in hospitals this Wednesday, doctors are also facing an influx of patients (flu, but also Covid and other respiratory illnesses).

“We have noticed a very great synchronization of the flu (and Covid) epidemics in Europe. What is happening in Spain or Italy should happen in France as well,” warns Antoine Flahault, director of the Geneva Institute of Global Health. Eleven of the thirteen regions of mainland France are now in the epidemic phase and 1.6% of emergency room visits last week were for influenza-like illness, according to the Public Health France report published this Wednesday.
