In exactly six months, on August 14th, the premiere of Georges Feydeau’s comedy “The Flea in the Ear” will be on the program at the Schloss Wolfpassing theater summer. Ten performances are planned until August 30th. Last Sunday there was a meeting of the management team on site. The new director Christian Himmelbauer’s second visit to Wolfpassing.

“I have to admit that I hardly knew the area here until now,” says the 51-year-old, born in Linz, who has lived in Vienna for 20 years and works as a freelance director and actor. And yet he can easily empathize with the role of director Christina Meister-Sedlinger, who brought him to Wolfpassing, and her husband, production manager Martin Sedlinger. “I have been directing the summer theater in the Hof Enns since 2006, so I know the requirements that you have as a seasonal theater operator, because the scale is similar. “That is definitely an advantage for everyone involved,” Himmelbauer is convinced.

“That was definitely one of the reasons why Christian was chosen. “He is a man of the theater and knows the problems of setting up a project like this,” emphasizes artistic director Christina Meister-Sedlinger.

Himmelbauer: “I concentrate fully on my role as director”

However, unlike this year’s production in Enns, Himmelbauer will not be on stage in Wolfpassing. “I find it very important, especially for the first time, that I can concentrate fully on the role as director and look at the production from the outside,” says Himmelbauer.

The eight-member ensemble that will be on stage at the Feydeau comedy “The Flea in the Ear” this year was put together by Christina Meister-Sedlinger and Christian Himmelbauer themselves, although it was important to Himmelbauer to meet all the ensemble members individually in advance. “It was important to me to get to know each other. Everyone should know what he or she is getting into. I think we have put together a good mix of Wolfpassing newcomers and people who would like to come back to Wolfpassing,” says Himmelbauer.

Four new faces in the eight-member ensemble

In addition to Christina Meister-Sedlinger, three other actors with wolf-passing experience can be seen in the ensemble: Michael Hinterhauser, Blanka Daneluk and Claire Corrine. There is also Christian Manuel Oliveira, an actor and singer who has already played in many large international houses. Christiane Burgerhofer brought Christian Himmelbauer from the Ennser Ensemble with her. There are also Raimund Stangl and Maximilian Steinacker from Ybbs.

From April 2nd, the ensemble will be rehearsing intensively together for a month in Wolfpassing or in the Steinakirchen cultural hall. “We have a somewhat special rehearsal situation, which is due to my involvement in Enns. We will now work on the piece in April. From mid/end of July the final rehearsals will take place directly in Wolfpassing Castle. But I can already promise one thing. It will be a very entertaining comedy regarding love, loyalty, infidelity and the ability of men to stand and not stand, with many appearances and departures and amusing mix-ups that both the actors and the audience should enjoy jumping into. In terms of acting, however, the production will be at a high level. I will certainly challenge the ensemble, because comedy is hard work,” explains Himmelbauer, who has the French comedy performed in the 1950s adapted version. “That fits quite well, because on the one hand there were no blue pills back then and on the other hand there were no cell phones either. And Feydeau’s ‘The Flea in the Ear’ is from the master class of tabloid comedy,” says Himmelbauer.

A lot else will be new at the Theater Summer 2024

But not only the director and some actors are new this year, “there will also be a lot of other new things at the Schloss Wolfpassing Theater Summer 2024,” says director Christina Meister-Sedlinger. From the seating plan to the lighting to the first real stage design, which production manager Martin Sedlinger will create in coordination with Christian Himmelbauer and the trained carpenter Heinz Bayerl (chairman of “Viva la Musica”). In addition, Valentina Vorwahlner, a new costume designer with a lot of theater experience, is joining the team. “This year we not only want to offer the audience an entertaining piece but also a lot to look at. “You should be able to just sit back, laugh and enjoy,” says Christina Meister-Sedlinger.
