[周刊王CTWANT] Starting in 1882, following more than 140 years of waiting, the five central towers of the Sagrada Familia, a famous local landmark in Barcelona, Spain, were finally completed. The sixth central tower is expected to be completed in 2026.

According to a “CNN” report, the Sagrada Familia was designed by Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí. At the beginning of the design, Gaudi decided to build 18 huge spindle-shaped towers to represent different biblical figures. It includes 12 apostles, 4 gospel writers, the Virgin Mary, Jesus and others.

According to records on the official FB fan page of the Sagrada Familia, on September 27, the construction team installed the final sculpture on the tower of the author of the Gospel of Matthew. On September 28, the author of the Gospel of John was also crowned with a statue of an eagle on top of his tower. In fact, before this, lion and fox statues have been placed on the towers of Marco and Lu respectively in 2022. At the end of 2021, a huge 12-pointed star sculpture was also placed on the top of the tower symbolizing the Virgin Mary.

The Sagrada Familia official also stated in a post on September 29 that “the tower of the four evangelists is complete! We will soon celebrate this important milestone in construction.” It is currently expected that the Holy Family Church will officially open Mass on November 12. At that time, the tower of the 4 Evangelists will be illuminated and will remain bright throughout the Christmas season.

It is understood that the construction of the Sagrada Familia began in 1882, and Gaudi, who designed it, passed away in 1926. Before his death, only 10 to 15% of the Sagrada Familia was completed, including a side aisle, a crypt and Part of the apse wall. Later, due to the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s, not only was the construction progress interrupted, but even some of the already built areas were destroyed.

Later, in 1984, the Sagrada Familia was designated a World Heritage Site and was consecrated in 2010 by Pope Benedict XVI in front of 6,500 believers. It is worth mentioning that Spanish authorities discovered in 2016 that the construction of the Sagrada Familia had never been formally approved, and the Barcelona City Government issued a building permit in 2019. If the Sagrada Familia is completed by then, it will replace Ulm Minster in Germany and become the tallest church in the world.
