The city of Minneapolis will become the first US city to allow Muslim calls to prayer to be broadcast at any time of the day through loudspeakers. The announcement of the Muslim call to prayer, the “adhan”, is broadcast five times a day. The Minneapolis City Council unanimously passed a measure on Thursday that will change the city’s noise ordinance code to allow calls to prayer to be broadcast. The code currently prevents early morning and late evening calls due to noise restrictions, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported.

“The Constitution doesn’t sleep at night,” Jaylani Hussein, executive director of the Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said after the vote. He said the Minneapolis action shows the world that a “nation built on freedom of religion delivers on its promises.”

The city’s mayor, Jacob Frey, is expected to sign the measure next week, making it official. “Minneapolis has become a city for all religions,” said Imam Mohammed Dukuly of the Masjid An-Nur mosque, who was among the Muslim leaders attending the vote.

Christian and Jewish leaders have expressed support for the extension of “adhan” times.
City authorities began working with local mosques three years ago to extend the hours of outdoor adhan broadcasts to five times a day during Ramadan.
