Transparent laptops are here. The Mobile World Congress 2024 has just started and we already have one of the most surprising devices in recent years. This is the Lenovo ThinkBook Transparent Display Laptop Concept, a laptop prototype that uses a 17.3 inch microLED transparent panel.

We have been able to spend some time playing around with this laptop and the idea has fascinated us. Clearly the visual experience is not up to par with what Lenovo itself offers with its ThinkBooks, but this transparent laptop opens the door to many possibilities. AND, For a concept, it was pretty solid in operation..

Transparent panels are not exactly new. Manufacturers like LG and Samsung They are already starting to produce them. What Lenovo has done here is take advantage of this screen technology that is expanding to add it to a category in which they have extensive experience.

A laptop where we cannot hide behind the screen

The transparent ThinkBook comes with a transparent panel where you practically no borders and a transparent keyboard area. In the official images it looks impeccable.

In terms of size and construction it really doesn’t differ much from other 17-inch laptops. We have a pair of USB ports on the sides and an aluminum base under the glass where the keyboard is projected and under the transparent screen.

What draws the most attention without a doubt is the transparent microLED panel. Although it is not the first one I have seen, the truth is that it is still not common to find this high quality in laptops. The color contrast is excellentwhich helps to further magnify the effect of transparency.

We have visited web pages, we have moved through Windows menus and drawn in Paint. The “white” areas remain transparent, but areas where there is color show up vividly.

As Lenovo explains, the panel reaches 1,000 nights of brilliance. We have only been able to test it indoors and with lighting conditions that helped improve its visibility, but the first impression has been quite positive.

Where it seems to me that the transparent screen is weak is in the representation of white tones. It is no longer that they are translucent, which is the idea, but that a bluish and magenta tint is clearly noticeable.

Lenovo does not miss the opportunity to talk regarding Content Generated by Artificial Intelligence. In these transparent laptops it will be possible to offer content adapted to the environment. Depending on what is behind the screen, adapt what is shown on it. In our demo we were not able to test this function, but it is an idea that Lenovo puts on the table. In the end it is a concept and they teach it with the intention of generating debate around it and listening to the opinions of different users.

Lenovo’s transparent laptop is a concept, but so was LG’s television and it has ended up materializing in the OLED T, available for purchase. Lenovo’s is the first to use the new MicroLED panels and to be fully functional, although Samsung offered a similar concept more than a decade ago. There is something that has changed in this time: transparent panels are already produced in large quantities.

Lenovo has been the manufacturer that has dared to produce it, but I am convinced that more brands will try similar prototypes. It’s not crazy. The use is very similar to that of a laptop, its manufacturing cost should not skyrocket so much and it has multiple advantages such as a much more minimalist design or being able to “fuse” the image of the screen with the environment, a trend that is increasingly present with the rise of mixed reality.

This transparent laptop concept is just what one expects when attending a technology conference like the Mobile World Congress. Innovative, functional products that put into practice the latest components available to you. We won’t be able to buy it, but following trying it for a while I became very curious regarding how I might use it in my daily life.

In Xataka | The boom in transparent screens is here and we are clear regarding what they want: replace all glass
