While the Senegalese are still awaiting the official national results of the legislative elections on July 31, the minutes of the departmental vote counting commissions published on Tuesday evening make it possible to know the weight of each coalition at the local level.
With our correspondent in Dakar, Thea Olivier
In the department of Dakar, the capital, the opposition coalition Yewwi Askan Wi won the election with more than 190,000 votes, to which must be added the 11,000 votes for the Wallu Senegal coalition, led by Abdoulaye Wade, with whom it made an alliance. Opposite, the ruling coalition Benno Bokk Yaakar obtained just over 93,000 votes.
The opposition also wins other significant departments like Thiès, Ziguinchor or Saint-Louis, where Mansour Faye, Minister of Infrastructure and Land Transport, has already admitted defeat.
For its part, the presidential camp has largely imposed itself in the department of Fatick, stronghold of President Macky Sall. The departments of Kaolack in the center of the country and Podor in the north were also won, for example, with nearly 92,000 votes out of 106,000 votes cast.
These figures do not yet allow us to determine which political camp will have the majority in the National Assembly. But the opposition – which still hopes to impose cohabitation – has already made a breakthrough when it had only obtained 40 seats out of the 165 in the hemicycle during the previous legislature.
