The wolf was shot in the Hochkönig and Steinernes Meer area, the state of Salzburg said in a broadcast. In the past two months, more than 30 sheep and lambs have been killed in the Hochkönig and Steinernes Meer area.

The wolf commissioner of the state of Salzburg, Hubert Stock, has checked compliance with the regulation. “The wolf was killed within the prescribed area. The evaluation will show us whether it is the detected problem wolf,” explained Stock. The dead animal will be further examined at the Research Institute for Wildlife Science in Vienna.

At the end of June, the state of Salzburg issued an ordinance allowing the legal shooting of two problem wolves, which are said to be the cause of numerous sheep kills. “The regulation takes effect, and that’s important. We do everything we can to ensure that the animals on our pastures are safe from problem wolves once more,” emphasized Deputy Governor Marlene Svazek (FPÖ) and Agricultural Councilor Josef Schwaiger (ÖVP).
