The National Institute of Astronomical Research issued a formal announcement detailing key astronomical phenomena anticipated throughout January 2022, observable from Egypt using the naked eye, binoculars, or small telescopes.

Upcoming Astronomical Events in January 2022

Egypt will experience numerous astronomical events this month. These celestial occurrences, according to the Astronomical Research Institute, include:

  • On January 2nd, the moon will rise and set with the sun. Its shadowed side will face Earth, making it invisible throughout the night. This presents an ideal opportunity to observe faint celestial objects such as galaxies, constellations, and star clusters.
  • A meteor shower will peak on January 3rd and 4th, with an anticipated rate of 40 meteors per hour under optimal viewing conditions (dark skies, clear air). Post-midnight viewing, away from city lights, is recommended.
  • January 4th: Lunar conjunction with Saturn.
  • January 6th: Lunar conjunction with Jupiter.
  • January 7th: Mercury reaches its greatest elongation from the sun (19.2 degrees), providing an excellent time for observation and astrophotography.
  • January 13th: Close approach of Mercury and Saturn.
  • January 17th, 2022: Full moon.
  • The full moon will be visible from January 16th to 19th, reaching its peak on the 17th (99.8% illumination). This full moon is traditionally known as the wolf moon by some Native American tribes.
  • January 17th: Lunar conjunction with the star Pollux.
  • January 18th: Lunar conjunction with the star cluster, Cell. Magnification (binoculars or telescope) is necessary for observation.
  • January 29th, 2022: Lunar conjunction with Mars, visible at dawn in the eastern sky.
