Pakistan’s first feature film in Balochi language ‘Duda’ is being screened in cinemas from September 2, directed by Adil Bizenjo.
At a time when Urdu films are struggling in the country, the theatrical release of a Balochi language film seems to be an unusual step.
The film ‘Duda’ is the story of a Baloch youth, who wants to become a boxer. This is the story of his passion, struggle and passion.
Imran Saqib, the producer of the film, told Independent Urdu that ‘this film is made for the sake of art and when it was made before the global epidemic of corona virus, it has cost around two hundred crore rupees.’
He said that ‘in three cinemas of Karachi this film will be presented in Balochi language while in the rest of the country it will be shown with Urdu dubbing.’
According to Imran Saqib: ‘There is only one cinema in Balochistan in Quetta Cantt and since the life system is suffering there after the heavy rain, this film will be shown there later.’
He said that ‘before this he has made several short films in Balochi language, so now it was necessary to make a feature film because no feature film in Balochi language had been released in the cinema till date.’
He requested people to ‘watch the film so that they can be inspired to make more films.’
Imran Saqib further said that ‘there are five songs in the film which he has written and composed himself and in this context special care has been taken for the melody.’
Adil Bizenjo, the director of the film ‘Duda’, says that ‘Baloch language and Baloch people were completely absent from the cinema scene of Pakistan. It was necessary to make a film in Balochi language to bring them here.’
“It’s a low-budget independent film. My mother tongue is Balochi, so I preferred to make my first film in Balochi.”
Adil Bizenjo is a film graduate from Karachi University’s Department of Visual Studies and has previously made several short films.
About the film, he said that he has shot it in different areas of Karachi including Lyari, while some of its photography has also been done in Gadani.
He said that he is interested in making films close to reality. ‘This film was delayed due to the global epidemic of Corona, otherwise it would have been presented in 2020.’

Adil further said that ‘due to the subject and nature of the film, he preferred to enter the fray with completely new actors.’
According to Adil: ‘We have worked hard, now it is up to the people to see it’.
Shoaib Hasan, who played the lead role in the film, said that he had ‘trained for three months for the role of a boxer in the film and suffered a lot of injuries during the shoot.’
He said that he is a Baloch. His father had migrated from Iran to Pakistan, but he himself was born in Karachi and worked in that city.

Shoaib said: ‘Since the role is that of a boxer, he took a lot of punches but there was no chance for romance in this film.’
He said that he has done the Urdu dubbing of this film himself.
The heroine of this film is Abila Kurd, a resident of Lyari, who is playing the role of Nazanin.
In a conversation with Independent Urdu, Abila said that it was not an easy decision for a Baloch girl from Lyari to act in a film, but it takes some courage to move forward.
He said that his father’s opposition was too much for the theater but ‘once permission was given, it was not much of a problem for the film. Only mother had said that you will not dance.’
He said that ‘there is not much romance in the film, there are a couple of songs that are also filmed very simply.’
She said, ‘This is her first film but as she is currently studying textile designing, her focus is more on education.’
It should be remembered that the first Balochi language film in Pakistan was made by Anwar Iqbal in 1976, Himal wa Mahganj, but it could not be shown in the cinema because the Baloch nationalists of that time declared it against Baloch culture.
The film was screened at the Arts Council on the occasion of Baloch Cultural Day in 2017, but has not yet been released in cinemas.
