The Estonian ice sailing championships, which started on March 8 at Haapsalu Esilahe, brought together more than 60 athletes from five countries.
The starting whistle, which was supposed to sound at 11 o’clock, was delayed because there was a lack of wind and the direction was constantly changing, so the organizers had to rearrange the track several times.
Ice-Optimists were the first to start the competition, and they managed to hold four races. The best of the day was Uku Melnits, a young man from the Pärnu Yacht Club, who won all the races and ended the day as the best. Miia Kubjas from Saaremaa Merisporti Seltsi finished the day in second place, and Aron Poolma from Pärnu took third place. 14 athletes compete in the Ice-Optimists category.
Nine athletes are competing in the DN-junior category, of whom the best of the day was Angus Aarna Ant, from the Pärnu yacht club, following two races. Saaremaa’s athlete Daniel Rüütel finished second on the day, and third place belongs to Latvian girl Leila Helga Sara Tolstika.
A total of 33 sailors compete in the DN boat class, of which the Hungarian athlete Peeter Hamrak was the best following two races, and the Polish sailor was in second place
Lukasz Zakrzewski and in third place Rasmus Maalinn from the Pärnu yacht club.
Nine teams compete in the Monotype-XV boat class. The calm wind is not suitable for monos, and so only one race might be held in this class. At the moment, the Polish team Jerzy Nowakowski and Lukasz Jedlinski are in first place, Indrek Aavik and Siim Valgre (SMS/HJK) are in second place, and Priit Pannas and Andrias Sillaste from the Saaremaa Merisport club are in third place.
