The first day of the Apertura Tournament marks the beginning of a new Uruguayan Championship

Montevideo, Feb 15 (EFE).- With Liverpool seeking to retain the title and the greats trying to celebrate once more, the 2024 Uruguayan Championship will begin this Friday with the first date of the Apertura, with the Nacional-River Plate duel.

Three short tournaments, the big trophy at the end of the year, four places in the next Copa Libertadores, another four in the Copa Sudamericana and three relegations are some of the things that the 16 teams that will participate will put into play.

After being reinforced with eleven players, Álvaro Recoba’s Nacional will take to the field of the Gran Parque Central stadium this Friday, where they will host River Plate.

The Panamanian goalkeeper Luis Mejía, the midfielder Mauricio Pereyra, the scorer Ruben Bentancourt, the Nigerian Osinachi Christian Ebere and the Argentines Alexis Castro and Gastón González, are some of the new players who will defend the Tricolor this season.

Also the pair of defenders that won the Uruguayan Championship with Liverpool in the previous one, made up of Juan Manuel Izquierdo and Mateo Antoni.

Some of them will be starters in a match that River Plate will play with a squad that also added many new players and released many others.

A day later, Fénix will host Danubio and Boston River will visit Deportivo Maldonado, while Miramar Misiones and Progreso will face each other in a match that will pit two of the three teams that returned to the circle of privilege.

On Sunday, Liverpool will begin their dream of a two-time championship by facing Racing.

With Emiliano Alfaro as the new coach, the Negriazul team will try to win the crown once more in a season that will face many changes to its squad and in which it will compete in the Copa Libertadores.

Diego García, Gastón Guruceaga, Matías de los Santos, Agustín González and Franco Nicola are some of the new players of a team that lost eight of the starting eleven that beat Peñarol in the last final of the Uruguayan Championship.

However, Liverpool kept the U-20 World Cup champion Luciano Rodríguez, the greatest promise in local football.

That same day, Peñarol will visit Cerro Largo at the historic Centenario stadium in Montevideo and will also do so with a renewed squad in which there are 13 new players.

Goalkeeper Washington Aguerre, Ecuadorian Byron Castillo, midfielders Leonardo Fernández and Gastón Ramírez, winger Eduardo Darias and Argentine Leonardo Sequeira are some of them.

Finally, Cerro will face Montevideo Wanderers on Sunday, while the match between the newly promoted Rampla Juniors and Defensor Sporting was postponed.

Postponed: Rampla Juniors-Defensor Sporting.
