He explained in an awareness publication today, that this declaration gives the World Health Organization the ability to recommend how countries should respond and can also mobilize global coordination for a more unified response, and part of this effort may include ensuring a more equitable distribution of vaccines and treatments.

He pointed out that the number of confirmed cases has so far reached more than 16,000 in more than 75 countries across Europe, North and South America, the Middle East, new parts of Africa, South Asia and Australia.

According to Abdel Ghaffar, the monkeypox virus spreads through close contact, mainly through direct exposure to rashes, contaminated clothing or linens, or through respiratory droplets.

So far, no deaths from the virus have been reported in the United States or Europe, even as the number of cases is rising.
