The first Arab to hold the position of Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Iraq

The Oman News Agency indicated that Al-Hassan was chosen due to his extensive experience in the diplomatic and political fields, as he held many positions, including Chairman of the Special Political Affairs and Decolonization Committee of the United Nations, and Facilitator of the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Strategy.

His selection to undertake this international mission came once morest the backdrop of the Sultanate of Oman’s foreign policy, which is characterised by moderation and balance and a long record in the field of peace diplomacy, conflict resolution, and resolving differences between countries through peaceful means, according to the agency.

This nomination was approved by the Iraqi government, which is looking forward to ending the political mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), allowing it to move to a new phase of political and economic development and positive interaction with the international community.

The agency concluded: “It is expected that Mohammed bin Awad Al-Hassan will work closely with the Iraqi government to make progress on outstanding issues, including those that may pose a threat to peace and security in Iraq.”

It is noteworthy that the UN Security Council had decided, at Baghdad’s request, to withdraw the UN mission from Iraq, which has been in the country for more than 20 years, by the end of 2025.

The resolution, which was adopted unanimously, extends the mandate of the mission, which was established in 2003, “for a final period of 19 months, until 31 December 2025.”

Iraq affirms that it will continue to cooperate with the international agencies of the United Nations, in accordance with the government program and its development goals at all levels and fields.
