For the 27th day, the fire has been burning on Mount Orvilos of Serres, with the mayor of Sintiki, Giorgos Tatsios, describing the prevailing situation to ERT3.
“26,000 acres are estimated to have burned to date, the fire was started on July 18 by lightning in an inaccessible area above Achladohori and unfortunately the fact that explosions from war material from other eras, from wars that have taken place, made access impossible, as a result firefighters to wait for the fire further down”, initially commented the mayor.
“It was only the aerial media that acted on the fire. About ten days ago, the fire began to descend menacingly towards Achladochori. The Fire Department together with the machinery of the municipality, the district and the army created a large fire zone, fortunately the fire did not pass through there. We had also prepared an evacuation plan. After burning that area, the fire passed to the west of Mount Orvilos and went towards Agistros, which is also not in danger”, described G. Tatsios.
“In the last week, the aerial vehicles have stopped flying as the 70 fires across the country have caused aircraft to go there, where residential areas are at risk. It was not the best thing for our area, to see an entire mountain burning and not have any help at all. From last night they started flying again and limiting the fire”, added the mayor of Sintiki.
