Considering the studio behind The Finals is packed with Battlefield veterans, making a shooter for Embark Studios must feel like second nature. However, it’s clear that the developers didn’t set out to make a shooter in the first place.
In an interview with Game Informer, creative director Gustav Tilleby talked regarding how The Finals came to be: ” In the beginning, we didn’t (initially) set out to make a shooter. I don’t think it’s something that’s really said out loud; it’s something that everyone thinks, like, ‘No, we shouldn’t do that,’ because we’ve done it before.
“We actually used to have things like game development festivals at work very early on, where everyone was pitching ideas and stuff. I pitched a few ideas including ‘Boring Idea One’ and ‘Boring Idea One’ Two’, these are shooters,” Tilleby said. “I called them that because I didn’t think anyone would be interested in making them anyway. So, we just talked regarding it and said, ‘Maybe we should give it a try.’ A few of us sat down Say, if we’re going to do this, it has to be unique; it has to be something that no one else is doing. So that’s where the whole pitching process starts.
The Finals has certainly proven itself to be a unique shooter. Attracting millions of players during its open beta phase and continuing that interest following launch feels like a breath of fresh air for the genre, but we’ll have to wait and see if it has a lasting impact.
