The Council of Ministers has approved a series of new measures to combat smoking and the tobacco lobby, Minister of Social Affairs and Public Health Frank Vandenbroucke explained on Tuesday. They include a ban on displaying tobacco products, a reduction in points of sale, an increase in taxes and even a strengthening of controls.
According to the Cancer Foundation, 24% of the Belgian population smokes, 19% of whom smoke daily despite the danger to health. In Belgium, around 14,000 people die from smoking each year and around 300,000 suffer from tobacco-related illnesses.
The federal government has therefore decided to intensify the fight once morest smoking and the tobacco lobby over the coming months, in order to move towards “a tobacco-free generation”. The new measures aim to motivate consumers to stop smoking, but also to dissuade the rest of the population. As a result, by January 1, the price of cigarettes will increase. But where are we in Europe compared to other countries?
