The International Automobile Federation (FIA) has announced three important changes for the 2024 Formula 1 World Championship that, according to them, will revolutionize the competition.
1. Modification of the weekend with a sprint race
The most significant change is the modification of the weekend with a sprint race. Starting this year, qualifying for the sprint race, known as the “shootout”, will be brought forward to Friday, following the only free practice session of the Grand Prix. The sprint race will take place on Saturday, just before qualifying for Sunday’s race.
This measure eliminates the one-day separation between qualifying and the race, a format that confused many fans. In this way, the two races related to the sprint are separated and Fridays are once once more a day with less adrenaline, in which only the sprint race grid is decided.
2. Advancement of the use of DRS
Another important change that will make the championship more exciting is the advancement of the use of DRS. Drivers will be able to open the rear wing and gain extra speed on the straights from the first lap.
This measure means that races will be more exciting from the start, as currently drivers cannot use DRS until they have completed two laps of the circuit.
3. Increase in power units
Finally, the FIA has decided to increase the allocation of power units to four per driver for the next two seasons.
Presentation of the changes to the World Motorsport Council
All these measures will be presented to the World Motorsport Council on February 28, just one day before the start of the Great Circus at the Sakhir International Circuit, so they are expected to be approved.
The presentations of the cars are already underway
The F1 season is regarding to begin. Proof of this is the FIA’s rush to announce these changes and the teams’ return to action. Three of them have already presented their cars for 2024: Haas, Williams and Stake.
