Vienna (OTS) Approximately 24,000 people affected by violence are supported across the whole of Austria every year by the violence protection centers in Austria, which are commissioned as specialized victim protection facilities.

The last reform, which brought with it measures such as mandatory counseling for people who have been expelled or the introduction of security police case conferences, has made significant progress in protecting victims in Austria. About 1-2% of cases are high-risk cases. These cases in particular are handled with great care by experts, the police and the public prosecutor’s office in the statutory security police case conferences.

By the time the police and violence protection centers are deployed, a lot has usually already happened. Most people don’t become violent overnight. That is why stronger measures in primary prevention are necessary: attachment and relationship-related parent training, attachment-supported parenting aid, conflict resolution models, free places for trauma therapy support for victims of violence, and much more. “The earlier help is offered, the easier it is to avoid violence in the family,” says Marina Sorgo, Federal Association Chairwoman of the Austrian Violence Protection Centers. “Early help through child and youth welfare, family care or programs in the health sector must be used even more.”

The violence protection centers welcome the introduction of nationwide violence ambulances, which secure relevant evidence for criminal proceedings. Even if women are not ready to file a complaint due to emotional or personal involvement, evidence for any proceedings can be secured.

“As the report shows, we also miss the training service for prospective judges in victim protection facilities,” says Sorgo. “This was used intensively a few years ago and the exchange was very enriching for both sides and brought regarding a better understanding of the needs of the victims.”
