The FBI has urged Americans to avoid using phone charging stations located at airports, hotels and other public places, saying they can be used to hack devices and pose a threat to privacy.
And the “FBI” posted on its website a leaflet in which it called on citizens to avoid using public charging stations in airports, hotels or shopping centers, noting that some pirates are exploiting these stations to introduce malware and spyware on the devices that are shipped. An account for the office’s branch in Denver republished this advice in a tweet on Twitter.
And the FBI isn’t the only federal agency that has issued a warning regarding phone charging in public places. The FCC has also alleged that malicious actors can use these ports to deliver malware to unsuspecting users’ devices.
This malware can provide hackers access to sensitive data, including passwords. Some devices, including some iPhones, provide some protection once morest these attacks by warning users of untrusted connections, but more sophisticated malware is able to bypass this protection.
