The FBF finally reacts to the non-approval of the GMK stadium in Cotonou – 2024-04-03 10:30:11

On the channels of Canal 3 Benin, the Beninese Football Federation finally breaks its silence regarding the non-approval of the General Mathieu Kérékou stadium in Cotonou by FIFA.

A few days ago, Beninese football lovers learned the bad news of the non-approval of the GMK stadium in Cotonou. This, despite so much investment by the Talon government. And if questions have arisen since then, we had answers this Tuesday, April 2, 2024.

The Secretary General of the FBF was on the microphone of Canal 3 Benin to give more explanations on the subject. “The decision came following a CAF evaluation mission. This mission went to Benin following our match which we delivered once morest Senegal (1-1). As part of the investigations, this Caf evaluation mission made reports and already on July 23, 2023, we received a letter asking us to improve a certain number of things. Later, on August 30, 2023, we were officially notified by CAF of the decommissioning of our stadium..”, declared Claude Paqui.

He subsequently addressed the reasons for this downgrade. “We were asked to improve the condition of our lawn. For example, in the locker rooms, there are certain things to be redone, for example in the projectors, the brightness was requested to further improve the quality. Also in terms of security, during matches certain things were required that we must do. There is the journalists’ press box. We asked that we might improve it to allow journalists to have better conditions for covering matches. There is also first aid through the treatment of officials, of the players that we have been asked to improve. Measures that must be taken to avoid tragedies“, he explained.

With the work still in progress, the Benin Cheetahs will not play their home match for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in Cotonou.
