If the image of the Vivaldi is so tarnished, it is the fault of the president of MR Georges-Louis Bouchez, according to Paul Magnette. “I’m not going to beat around the bush”warned the president of the PS in the Sunday newspaper De Zondag.
“From the start, he discussed, criticized the decisions, blocked the reforms”, said the socialist regarding the president of the MR, coalition partner. “On the show ‘Special
Forces’ of VTM, Mr. Bouchez was described as ‘dead weight’ for the group. I mightn’t express it better. The government wasted too much energy and time on him.”
Mr Magnette also believes that an agreement on the long-awaited tax reform is still possible. All the parties, with the exception of the MR, agree on the main principles.
The Iranian visa case is separate from that and, for the PS president, “the MR should not be given more power than he has. If Mr. Bouchez blocks everything, we also have other options. The MR is not essential. We can perfectly form another majority with Les Engagés”.
Finally, while Vlaams Belang is making strong progress in the polls, Mr. Magnette reaffirms the position of the PS, namely that there will be no negotiations with the far-right party. “If they want independence, let them have a referendum. It’s the only democratic procedure. And maybe now is the time to do it. I really mean it. Flemings will say ‘no’. This debate can then be definitively thrown in the trash.”
