The fatal accident in Kvinnherad: The father went into the river twice to save his son

A massive rescue operation was launched on Monday morning after a 13-year-old fell into the Bondhuselva in Kvinnherad in Vestland county.

Police chief Sigurd Børve says that the boy’s father immediately got into the river in an attempt to save his son.

The father must have made it to the boy, who was stuck. He tried to get hold of the boy, but was swept away by the masses of water and had to get ashore.

– He was joined further. The father went back inside, but the same thing happened again, says Sigurd Børve Bergens Tidende.

Witness jumped into the water

A witness also jumped in, but experienced the same thing as his father: that the force of the water masses was too great.

According to Børve, the witness had to surrender in order not to risk his own life.

– They did everything they could and more. One can only imagine how traumatic it must have been, says the police chief.

According to the police and the fire service, the operation was very demanding due to the strong current in the river.

On a day trip

The boy was an only child and was on a day trip in the area with his parents.

– We questioned one of the parents on Tuesday. It turned out that the boy had been walking around like all other children do, says the head of the police in Kvinnherad,

– This was a tragic, random accident with the worst imaginable consequences, emphasizes the police chief.

The parents are grateful for all the help, even if their lives were not saved. The police chief has passed on feedback from the parents to the rescue teams who participated.

– All civilians who participated, with everything from transport of equipment to help on the spot, should also receive the same thanks, Børve tells the newspaper.
