Mosquitoes are present almost everywhere in the world. Except in Antarctica. And… in Iceland! A question of climatclimate, probably. It remains to be explained. Meanwhile, wherever they live, mosquitoes bite. They can thus, as we know, transmit diseases that are sometimes serious. You might think that’s all there is to know regarding mosquitoes. But that’s not entirely true. Because what is also important to know is that only female mosquitoes bite. That’s the big difference between males and females in the family.

The female mosquito is the one that bites us

A few clarifications are in order here, however. Female mosquitoes are the only ones to inflict bites… on living beings. Both humans and other animals. Because they need, to nourish their eggs, proteinproteins which are found in the blood. And as in summer, they can lay eggs every two weeks…

Male mosquitoes are pollinators. They are therefore of interest to ecosystems. And they also sting, finally, in a certain way. But only plants and flowers, to suck their nectar.

Anatomical differences between male mosquito and female mosquito

Between mosquito female mosquito and male mosquito, there are also anatomical differences. Thus the hairiness of males is more developed than that of females. The small hairs on their antennae are more numerous. On those of the tiger mosquitoes, they even appear “feathery”.

To locate their prey and detect their odors, female mosquitoes have, on the other hand, more developed sensory organs than male mosquitoes.

Female mosquitoes also have a long, stylet-shaped proboscis with which they bite living things. It breaks down into an alimentary canal through which the victim’s blood is sucked and a salivary canal through which the irritating substance that scratches us so much is injected.

It is also only the female that produces the noise so characteristic of the mosquito. If you hear it, then, take cover. But be aware that this noise is emitted to seduce the male, by ultra-fast wing beats. Up to 2000 per second.

Finally, of course, if you spot a reddish mosquito, rest assured that it is indeed a female. Since this colorcolor will come to her from the blood she has just gorged on.
