In Turrini’s work, Ferdinand Raimund’s “The Farmer as a Millionaire” is being rehearsed in a small theater in 1848, while the revolution in Metternich’s Vienna is drawing ever closer. The narrator Adam Holzapfel leads through the play and also takes on other roles in the play: he is recruited by the Imperialists as an infantryman in an execution squad, works as a caretaker at the theater, is a rejected lover, father of a family, philosopher, survivor and a kind of anarchist.
The Raimundspiele Gutenstein regretfully had to announce in May 2023 that Johannes Krisch was unable to play the main role due to illness. He was replaced by Günter Franzmeier, who has come full circle. In 2014 he played Fortunatus Root in Ferdinand Raimund’s “The Farmer as a Millionaire” at the Raimundspiele Gutenstein. It is precisely this piece that will play an important role in Gutenstein in the summer of 2023.

Born in Upper Austria, Günter Franzmeier has been an actor since 1988. After several years as a freelance actor, he became a member of the ensemble at the Volkstheater in Vienna. After 25 years and three directorships at the Volkstheater, he has been a member of the ensemble at the Theater in der Josefstadt since 2022.
A world premiere in the Gutenstein theater tent
“When Johannes Krisch and the Gutensteiners asked me if I wanted to write a new piece for the Raimundspiele there, a long-cherished idea reawakened in me: What happens when art and reality collide? When catastrophes, pandemics, wars, revolutions don’t take place somewhere, but at the gates of the theater? When theater rehearsals fall apart because the fatal events don’t stop at the doors, as was the case, for example, during the pandemic?” This is what Peter Turrini writes regarding the motives and background to his new work.

“And there’s something else I wanted to explore with this play: whether my theatrical credo that there is comedy in every tragedy can also be maintained under these circumstances. Theater is a common art. I wrote a score and now I’m very curious to see what the director, the set designer, the actors and actresses will do with it,” Turrini continued.
“Off to Gutenstein” Turrini calls out to the audience on the Raimundspiele website. Premiere is July 13th. Stephanie Mohr is directing this year. The stage design is by Miriam Busch. The game will be played until August 6th.
