By pacting with the People’s Party (right) in Castile and León, the far-right formation Vox integrates an autonomous government. A first since the end of the Franco dictatorship in Spain, deciphers the national press.
“A good deal” in favor of “prosperity and well-being of citizens” for the conservative press; “a toxic pact” who threatens “coexistence and democratic dignity” for the progressive press: on Thursday March 10, the government agreement concluded between the People’s Party (PP, right) and the far-right formation Vox in Castile and León deeply divided the media in Spain.
“For the first time in the history of Spanish democracy”, the far right will be part of a government, laments the left-wing site Ctxt. Discussions between the PP and Vox had been opened following the legislative elections in this region of the northwestern part of Spain, a highly decentralized country.
The election was won by the PP of outgoing regional president Alberto Fernández Mañueco, but without a majority in the autonomous parliament. With 13 Castilian-Leonese deputies elected, Vox then represented a more than credible alternative to form a coalition.
The will of the Castilian-Leonese people
For the conservative daily The world, this pact should be welcomed, “because it will govern and dissipate the specter of a new election”. A ballot should automatically have been reconvened in the event of an impasse in the negotiations.
