the essential The Aveyronnais and the Englishman will extend the magic of their album “The Fantasy Life of Poetry and Crime”, recorded in Normandy, on Friday October 27, at the Bikini in Ramonville.
One of the most beautiful records of the year was born in Étretat. Funny place for a meeting. There, with their feet on Norman soil but their heart and soul turned towards England, Peter Doherty and Frédéric Lo recorded the songs from “The Fantasy Life of Poetry and Crime”.
“From the start, we felt that something was happening,” remembers Frédéric Lo, composer, guitarist, arranger and producer of the record, who had already created the marvelous Crèvecoeur by Daniel Darc, another dent in life. I was preparing my tribute album to Daniel and when I played Useless and Out of Order to Peter, he started crying – he doesn’t like me saying that! We recorded it, then he asked me if we might continue writing songs together. I replied: Okay, but I’m going on vacation tomorrow! I go skiing with my family and, two weeks later, Peter calls me: I’m in Paris, can we see each other? I understood that I should not let the opportunity pass: I came home and played him a few songs. He got down on his knees – he doesn’t want me to say that either… – and begged me to let him write some texts on it. »
The duo settled in Seine-Maritime, a stone’s throw from the famous cliffs, in the superb 19th century residence lent by a friend, which we see on the cover of the record. There, Frédéric records the whole day, waiting for the British dandy to open the door: “Whether he arrived at eight in the morning or ten in the evening had little importance for me: he came to work for two hours, rarely more, but he was then totally focused, invested. I think he’s very proud of this record. » We understand: the Englishman has never sung or written so well. Beautifully arranged, “The Epidemiologist”, “The Ballad of…”, “The Monster” already have the timeless brilliance of classics like “How can we hang on to a dream” by Tim Hardin or “One” by Harry Nilsson.
“No ego war”
“There was no war of egos between us and I think that the fact that I am not a fan of the Libertines probably played a part. We were just very happy to be together. Sometimes we would get to work right away, sometimes we would go swimming in ice water, take a walk or talk poetry before playing. Peter is a star, but he was the one who had this fear of not being good enough! He is said to be unpredictable – he doesn’t have a cell phone, for example… – but he has never crashed a concert or a promotional meeting,” underlines the guitarist. In a reduced and acoustic format – guitar, piano, violin – the Doherty/Lo tandem will once once more reach peaks of emotion this Friday.
