The fantasy film Dungeons and Dragons failed in cinemas, it is a megahit on Netflix – SMARTmania.cz
  • The Dungeons & Dragons movie has appeared on Netflix after a failed theatrical release
  • It became a hit there, especially in the Balkans
  • It is also available on Netflix in the Czech Republic, where it went from SkyShowtime

Last year saw the release of quite a large number of high-quality films that earned the attention of the audience. Just randomly, they were, for example, Barbie, Oppenheimer, Super Mario Bros. in the movie, Spider-Man: Across Parallel Worlds, Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 3, Fast and Furious 10, Mission: Impossible Retribution – Part One, Indiana Jones and the Tool of Fate or John Wick: Chapter 4. It is therefore not surprising that in the flood of such high-quality and audience-attractive titles, the film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor of Thieves lost.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor of Thieves is headed to Netflix

The film from the world of Forgotten Realms, loved by fantasy fans around the world, did not come to theaters at the best possible time. Perhaps this is also why it grossed approximately 208 million dollars (approx. 4.8 billion CZK) in theaters, which made it a commercial failure considering the budget of 150 million dollars (approx. 3.4 billion CZK).

At the same time, it is not a bad film at all – it still holds a pleasant 80 percent on ČSFD, 81 percent on Kinobox, it can boast a rating of 7.2 out of 10 on IMDB, and the Rotten Tomatoes server gives it an expert rating of 91 percent and even 93 for viewers percent. The better foreign rating is primarily due to the fact that Dungeons & Dragons is a pop culture phenomenon outside of our homeland, while the Czech variation of Dragon’s Den has caught on here.

Now, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor of Thieves seems to be getting a second wind thanks to its inclusion on the Netflix streaming platform. According to Screen Rant, the film boasts 3.2 million followers and a total of 7.2 million hours watched, despite the fact that the film is not available on the American mutation of Netflix. The film is doing particularly well in the Balkans, for example, in Croatia and Serbia. The film is also available in the Czech version of Netflix, but only with Czech subtitles. With the Czech dubbing, the film was available on the SkyShowtime platform until recently, but when it came to Netflix, it unfortunately had to be ordered from a smaller streaming service.

Don’t overlook

Overview of the absolute best new releases on Netflix (October 9, 2024)

Dungeons & Dragons: Thieves’ Honor is quite the star-studded cast. For example, Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis or Hugh Grant will appear in the main roles. The story is about a group of adventurers led by the bard Edgin Darvis, who set out to find a magical relic that will bring his wife back to life. The film does not lack both serious and touching moments, as well as humorous elements for which Dungeons & Dragons is famous. Although a sequel is uncertain due to the commercial failure, actor Chris Pine himself has hinted that if the business model can be worked out, we could expect a sequel.

Well, well, well! Gather ’round, ladies and gentlemen, because we have a tale of fantasy, adventure, and… awkward timing! It seems that the Dungeons & Dragons movie, which flopped harder than a bard trying to seduce a dragon, has found new life on Netflix! Yes, after strutting its stuff in theaters and earning about $208 million—which sounds impressive until you consider it cost a whopping $150 million to make—the film is pulling a classic comeback more dramatic than a rogue dodging an attack!

So, why did this movie tank at the box office? Think of it like this: imagine you’re at a buffet, and there’s a full spread of Barbie, Oppenheimer, and Super Mario Bros. to choose from—suddenly a film about rolling dice and slaying dragons looks like the sad, leftover sandwich at the end of the table. Honestly, what kind of audience wants to trade in an epic battle with Peach’s pink brigade for a D&D quest at a time when cinematic giants were flexing their muscles?

But hey, here’s the twist: Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is now a hit on Netflix, especially in the Balkans! That’s right, folks—turns out, in a landslide of streaming options, the film is a cult hit. It has solid numbers with 3.2 million followers and a hefty 7.2 million hours watched, despite being MIA on Netflix’s American platform! How’s that for a sleeper hit? I can just picture it now—a bunch of Serbian fans cheering louder than a bard plucking a lute at a tavern!

And it only gets better! The film boasts a star-studded cast including Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, and Hugh Grant—who could charm a dragon with that smile! It tells the tale of adventurers on a quest for a magical relic—perfect for those with a sense of nostalgia for late-night D&D sessions unless you’re my dad, who still thinks rolling dice is a way to fix his golf swing!

Interestingly, despite its initial flop, ratings have been surprisingly generous. It holds an impressive 80% on ČSFD, 81% on Kinobox, and a respectful 7.2 on IMDB. Even Rotten Tomatoes is singing a happy tune, giving it a dazzling 91% with a 93% audience score! It’s as if critics and viewers are playing their own game of "Who Can Give the Best Rating?" while the poor film is just trying to find a table to roll its dice on!

Now, let’s address the elephant in the room—will there be a sequel? Chris Pine has teased that if the business model can be worked out, a follow-up could be in the cards! Honestly, I can see the upcoming sequel promoting itself as Dungeons & Dragons: The Quest for Box Office Redemption—and what a quest that would be!

In conclusion, it seems this film was as out of place in theaters as a wizard in a rock concert, but now that it’s dancing its way onto Netflix, it’s experiencing a delightful second chance. So here’s to “Honor Among Thieves”—may it roll a natural 20 in the streaming realms, and may we all be lucky enough to join the adventure from our couches! Cheers!
