Gerasimos Kappatos founded the Kappatos Art Gallery in 1991 which quickly became a point of reference, with an orientation exclusively to contemporary art and the main values ​​of the operation being “the high quality of artistic practice, intellectual creation and a dialectical approach” “in a wider social and cultural context”. He chose the “neglected” historical center of Athens as a roof, initially in a space on Agias Irini Street and then at number 12 of Athenas Street, renovating a floor of 560 sq.m. There, in addition to the exhibitions that particularly attracted the young audience and cultivated collecting interest, he also inaugurated the Art Residency institution, hosting many artists, with the aim of promoting the international exchange of practices and knowledge in the arts (visual and sound art, architecture, performance) and public interventions.

Gerasimos Kappatos was born in Kefalonia in 1955. In 1972 he moved to Athens, in the neighborhood of Kypseli. He studied marine engineering at the Universities of Southampton and Plymouth, Great Britain, while he was a qualified musician and pianist. In England he worked as an inspector for shipping companies, then he was active in what really satisfied him, in the field of music, cinema and theatre, as a composer of contemporary music and a producer of contemporary music radio shows. He was also a gender advisor to the Ministry of the Interior in 1997. Relatives and friends bid him farewell at the Metropolitan Church of the Evangelistria in his hometown of Argostoli.
