Despite the attractive commercial flop ofAsterix and Obelix: The Middle KingdomGuillaume Canet maintained that his film is a success despite everything…
After the famous legend of “what is risk?”, it is now possible to propose “what is denial?”. Despite their staggering budget estimated at some 65 million eurostheir big-name cast and its promotional campaign worthy of the latest iPhone, the latest adventures of the Gauls haven’t exactly unleashed the crowds.
While it had been calculated that 6 million admissions would be necessary to make the production of the film profitable, it ultimately only succeeded in arousing the curiosity of 4.6 million spectators in France ; so much so thatAsterix and Obelix: The Middle Kingdom has enough to claim the title of the first big flop of the French box office in 2023. For comparison, the now cult Mission Cleopatra by Alain Chabat had attracted more than 14.5 million spectators in French cinemas, and 10.2 million internationally when it was released in 2002.
But while her last baby shows the blowa disastrous critical reception and more than lukewarm recipesGuillaume Canet keeps his head held high, and told the Sunday newspaper that, no no, his film was not a flop at all:
“It is absolutely not a failure. It has been sold all over the world and has to date made more than 2 million admissions internationally, with boxes in Europe, in Poland for example. […] We forget that before Avatar launched the movement at the end of the pandemic, few films made these figures.
Let’s move on. Difficult however to play the policy of the ostrich without risking the total disconnection with reality. Asked regarding the bad press of his film (i.e., an average of 1.8/5 stars on Allocinated), Canet admitted that it was not “never pleasant”but that he refused to be defeated:
Alone once morest all
“Me, I worked for five years to achieve what I wanted to do: a great adventure show. Some people like it, others don’t. […] I hope I will make another film that will please my detractors more and change their minds regarding my work. […] I am very happy with the feedback I get from people on the street, especially children. They liked it a lot, that’s the most important thing for me.”
Nevertheless, it would seem that behind the facade, Guillaume Canet is more lucid regarding the success of his film than he lets on. So he confided that he was not particularly inclined to dive back into such an enterprise anytime soon:
“I don’t rule out wanting a new big machine in a few years. But today I’m more keen on something more intimate (…) with a reduced team and less pressure perhaps. to be too”. All in good time.
