The two Brussels minors who attacked lifeguards or supervisors this Monday, July 18 at Blaarmeersen, a Ghent park with a swimming pond, are no longer allowed to go there for a month. The mayor of Ghent, Mathias De Clercq, indicated on Friday that he had imposed a ban on them which applies to the entire recreational field.
“The facts are so serious, blows and injuries to rescuers and supervisors, that they complicate the optimal functioning of the place”, justifies the mayor, who considers that the measure was necessary to restore order.
At the beginning of July there had already been a place ban for a person who caused disturbances to the Blaarmeersen.

Mayor Mathias De Clercq seems to want to appeal to the Brussels public prosecutor’s office, because many young people come from the capital to relax in the Ghent recreational area. “We really want the Brussels public prosecutor’s office to do something”, he explains, believing that a “different approach” is necessary for minors, which allows young people “to be confronted with the seriousness of the facts” and who works on the “repair” and with the direct entourage of the young person.
Lifeguards and supervisors intervened on Monday followingnoon when they saw that the two young people were causing discontent at the slide of the swimming pond. A fight ensued and a supervisor had to be sent to hospital with a broken jaw and a concussion.
