‘The Fabelmans’ and ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’ were in the spotlight at the 80th Golden Globes on Tuesday night in Los Angeles, marking the awards’ return to television following accusations of racism and corruption.
“The Fabelmans”, semi-autobiographical feature film by Steven Spielberg won him the third prize of his career as best director. Spielberg, 75, explained on stage that he “never had the courage to face this story head-on”.
“I’ve been hiding from this story since I was 17,” he said as he received his trophy.
‘The Banshees of Inisherin’, a tragicomedy regarding the breakup of two friends living on an Irish island, won three awards during the evening. Director Martin McDonagh, known for his humorous stories, won Best Screenplay for the film.
Cate Blanchett won Best Actress in a Drama for her role as bandleader in Tar, while Austin Butler won Best Actor in the biopic Elvis.
On the comedy side, Irishman Collin Farrell won the best actor award for his role in The Banshees of Inisherin, and Michelle Yeoh was crowned best actress in the film Everything Everywhere All At Once.
In addition, the Golden Globes for the best foreign language film returned to “Argentina, 1985”, that of best animated film to “Pinocchio by Guillermo Del Toro” and best screenplay to Martin McDonagh, for “The Banshees of ‘Inisherin’.
The Golden Globes Awards are American film and television awards given since 1944 by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
