Earlier this week, news broke that Hamas political leader Ismail Haniya had been killed in Iran. During Thursday, Israel’s military also stated that the leader of Hamas’s military branch, Mohammed Deif, had been killed in an attack in Gaza.

Israel’s targeting of leaders is not an entirely unusual strategy, says Schulz. The pattern is recognizable from earlier in the war. On previous occasions, Israel has targeted attacks well beyond its own borders with the aim of killing individuals.

– Israel has actually always had such a policy since the 50s where targeted executions are carried out.

He could be the next target

Now Israel is expected to target Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, who is described as the mastermind behind the October 7 attack. But even if it succeeds, Hamas will probably live on, Schulz believes.

– It is not that easy to knock out an entire movement, he says.
