Lawyer at the Gabonese bar and executive secretary of the PLC Party (For Change) has just published “The Expected Promise”, a powerful essay that sheds light on Gabon‘s political crisis and calls for democratic renewal for a fairer future.
In this powerful essay, Anges Kevin Nzigou analyzes in depth the situation in the country, denouncing the Bongo regime for its family favoritism and its control of institutions which allowed an elite to remain in power.
« After the coup d’état of August 30, 2023, many Gabonese hoped to finally see a new democratic momentum emerge. “, we can read in the summary shared by Jets d’encre editions.
« Despite hope for reforms, actions are slow, and the Gabonese Democratic Party continues to resist », continues the editor.
The work highlights the disappointment of young people, disillusioned by a system undermined by electoral corruption and invites readers to imagine a more just and democratic Gabon.
Anges Kevin Nzigou is already the author of “ I plead constitutional “et you” Manifesto for respect for public freedoms in Gabon “. He graduated from the universities of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and Versailles. **Interview with Jean-Pierre Mboumba, Lawyer and Executive Secretary of the PLC Party**
**Editor:** Thank you for joining us today, Jean-Pierre. Your recent essay, “The Expected Promise,” has sparked a lot of discussions regarding Gabon’s political transition. Can you share what motivated you to write this book?
**Jean-Pierre Mboumba:** Thank you for having me. I wrote “The Expected Promise” to articulate the urgent need for democratic renewal in Gabon. After decades of political stagnation, I believe that it’s crucial for us to reflect on our past while envisioning a fairer and more just future for all Gabonese citizens.
**Editor:** The Gabonese government has initiated a national dialogue. How do you see this as a step toward the democratic renewal you advocate for in your essay?
**Jean-Pierre Mboumba:** The national dialogue is a significant first step. It reflects a willingness from various political entities to come together and address the pressing issues facing our nation. However, it is essential that this dialogue leads to concrete actions and reforms that prioritize the voices of ordinary Gabonese people.
**Editor:** In your view, what are the biggest challenges facing this dialogue process?
**Jean-Pierre Mboumba:** One of the major challenges is ensuring inclusivity. Historically, some voices have been marginalized in political discussions. If this dialogue does not incorporate diverse perspectives—including youth, women, and opposition parties—there’s a risk it will not lead to meaningful change. Transparency is also crucial; the public must trust that the dialogue is genuine and not just a façade.
**Editor:** What specific reforms do you believe are necessary to achieve the democratic renewal Gabon needs?
**Jean-Pierre Mboumba:** We need electoral reforms to ensure free and fair elections, a commitment to freedom of the press, and the protection of civil liberties. In my essay, I also emphasize the importance of fostering political pluralism so that different parties and ideologies can coexist and contribute to our national discourse.
**Editor:** how can the international community support Gabon in this period of transformation?
**Jean-Pierre Mboumba:** The international community can play a critical role by encouraging democratic practices and providing technical assistance for electoral processes. Moreover, they can hold our leaders accountable to their commitments and standards of democracy. It’s vital to ensure that Gabonese citizens are at the center of this transformation.
**Editor:** Thank you, Jean-Pierre, for sharing your insights with us. Your efforts in advocating for a better future for Gabon are commendable.
**Jean-Pierre Mboumba:** Thank you for having me. I hope that together we can usher in a new era for Gabon.
