On the sidelines of the climate adaptation summit held in Rotterdam on September 5, Macky Sall, current president of the African Union, answered a few questions for France 24.

Macky Sall says he has “a bit of concern” regarding the willingness of Western countries to fund Africa’s adaptation to climate change and warns that if the funding is not there, Africans will resort to fossil fuels. He also wonders regarding the absence of European leaders at the Rotterdam summit on climate adaptation, while it is being held in the heart of the continent, and recalls that there are only two months left before the COP scheduled for Sharm el-Sheikh in order to achieve this objective.

More generally, he regrets Africa’s lack of weight in global decisions. He is thus indignant at the “injustice” of the absence of representatives from the continent as permanent members of the UN Security Council and the difficulty of being heard in multilateral forums such as the G20, where he announces that the African Union should obtain membership as such at the G20 summit in Bali scheduled for November.
