In particular, according to the protothema, in her post, Ms. Sakellaropoulou states: “The heroic exodus of the “Free Besieged”, on Palm Sunday 1826, is one of the leading, as well as tragic, moments of the Greek Revolution.
A moment of transcendence that shocked European public opinion, won the admiration of the entire world, contributed to the re-warming of the Philhellenic movement and stamped our recent history with its universal symbolism.
Today we honor the memory of the defenders of his Holy City Messolonghi, who fought with self-sacrifice and did not cower before the superior Turkish forces. From the darkness of slavery they marched fearlessly into the light of freedom, setting the moral standard and collective values that have guided our nation on its path thus far.
Their pre-determined sacrifice is a valuable legacy for the younger generations and a source of inspiration for all of us.”
