The Exciting Race: Álvaro Bautista Clinches Victory in the Second Race of the 2023 Superbike World Championship in Most

The second race of the 2023 Superbike World Championship in Most was won by Álvaro Bautista following an epic duel with Toprak Razgatlioglu. Danilo Petrucci (Ducati) and Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki) on the podium.

After a rain shower in the morning and in the second race of the Supersport World Championship, the weather in Most once more developed into a pleasant mixture of clouds and sun. When the race started at 2 p.m., the thermometer showed 26 degrees and the track was completely dry.

Due to the Superpole race, the grid had changed in the front positions. Toprak Razgatlioglu (Yamaha), Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki) and Álvaro Bautista (Ducati) lined up on the front row. Lurking on row 2 were Axel Bassani (Ducati), Michael Rinaldi (Ducati) and Remy Gardner (Yamaha). Garrett Gerloff with the best BMW followed in 9th place on the grid, Dominique Aegerter started the second race from 12th place. Philipp Öttl (Ducati) stayed last.

After the start, an epic and duel between Bautista and Razgatlioglu developed according to the same scheme. The two drove several laps almost simultaneously across the line, but the late brakeman from Turkey was always ahead in the chicane. Just when it was thought Bautista would settle for second place, Razgatlioglu fell and the Spaniard inherited victory without a fight.

Jonathan Rea was able to follow the duo at the front for a long time, but was never within striking distance. In the last third of the race, the Kawasaki pilot had problems with declining tires and was relegated to third place by Danilo Petrucci (2nd, Ducati) on the last lap.

Ducati privateer Axel Bassani once more impressed with a furious ride, following the 24-year-old dropped back to 12th place following a ride through the gravel, he fought his way forward with fast lap times and still edged out his intimate enemy on the last lap Michael Rinaldi from fourth place.

Best BMW driver was Scott Redding in 8th place, just 0.7 seconds behind Andrea Locatelli’s second works Yamaha. The best Honda brought Xavi Vierge home in ninth position.

Dominique Aegerter (Yamaha) and Philipp Öttl (Ducati) drove an unremarkable race in 11th and 13th place.

Lap 1: Bautista 0.5s ahead of Bassani. Oettl on 17.

Lap 2: Bassani misses the chicane and rejoins in 12th. Bautista ahead of Rea, Razgatlioglu and Rinaldi. Crash Eric Granado.

Lap 3: Bautista ahead of Rea and Razgatlioglu. Baz in 9th place with the best BMW, followed by Vierge as the best Honda driver. Baldassarri overthrown.

Lap 4: Bautista 0.8s ahead of Razgatlioglu. Lowes misses the chicane and loses eight positions. Oettl on 16.

Lap 5: Razgatlioglu in 1:31.951 min with the fastest lap. Rinaldi (4th) and Gardner (5th) only 1.4 seconds back. Aegerter in 12th place, Öttl in 15th place.

Lap 6: Razgatlioglu on Bautista’s rear wheel. Rea (3rd) loses 1.2 sec.

Lap 7: Petrucci overtakes Locatelli and is sixth. Öttl within striking distance of Lowes (14th).

Lap 8: Bautista and Razgatlioglu overtake each other several times, in the end the Turk stays ahead.

Lap 9: Rea is one second behind, Rinaldi (4th) can no longer get closer to the Kawasaki pilot. King gives up the race.

Lap 10: Redding, Vierge, Lecuona, Aegerter, Lowes and Öttl fight for 10th place.

Lap 11: Bautista and Razgatlioglu have been crossing the line at the same time for several laps, but the Yamaha rider brakes later and later in the first corner. Redding past Baz for 9th place.

Lap 12: Rea (3rd) is still only 1.1 seconds behind, but he cannot benefit from the battle for position among the top 2. Rinaldi (4th) 2.8 seconds back. Petrucci (6th) catches up to Gardner.

Lap 13: Öttl finally past Lowes in 14th place.

Lap 14: The match between Bautista and Razgatlioglu on the straight and the chicane is repeated lap following lap. Rea has problems and is 1.8 seconds behind.

Lap 15: Bassani has moved up from 12th to 6th place.

Lap 16: Razgatlioglu 0.6s ahead of Bautista and 2.9s ahead of Rea.

Lap 18: Rinaldi is only 0.9 seconds behind Rea – but Petrucci is also lurking behind Rinaldi.

Lap 19: Bassani (5th) fastest man on the track and catches up with Rea, Rinaldi and Petrucci.

Lap 20: Bautista 4.4s ahead of Rea. Petrucci catches Rinaldi by surprise and is third. Redding (8th) on the back wheel of Locatelli (7th).

Round 21: Bassani sniffs his intimate enemy Rinaldi.

Last lap: Bautista wins, Petrucci secures 2nd place ahead of Rea. Redding (8th), Aegerter (11th), Öttl (13th).
