The cause of death of actor Matthew Perry was acute exposure to ketamine, a potent substance commonly used as an anesthetic. This was stated in the report of the Los Angeles Medical Examiner’s Office, CNN reports.

“With the high levels of ketamine found in his post-mortem blood samples, the underlying causes of death might have been both cardiovascular overexcitation and respiratory depression,” the report said.

The report noted that Perry was receiving ketamine therapy for depression and anxiety. Moreover, the last dose of the drug as part of therapy was a week and a half before his death – this is significantly longer than the time during which this substance should still have been in his body.

Other contributing causes of the actor’s death were coronary heart disease and exposure to buprenorphine, which is used to treat opioid use disorder.

Perry’s death has been officially ruled an accident.

The body of 54-year-old Perry was discovered on the followingnoon of October 28 in the pool at his home in Los Angeles.

Perry struggled with addiction to painkillers and alcohol for many years and was treated in rehabilitation clinics several times. He spoke regarding this, in particular, in his biography, published in 2022.
