The Evolution of Sevens Football in Malabar: From Local Players to New Heights

2023-12-05 17:42:00

Football and bullfighting were the two sports of Malabar. Sevens football is currently in a position where both can be seen at the same venue. It wasn’t like this in the 90s. The local players of each country are playing. Then there is no need for enmity. Football has gone from the style of his own country to his own fight to a different economic level. There is no such thing as locals playing for locals anymore.

The most beautiful sevens match I have seen in my life is from Vantur. While studying in the fourth standard, the town team Aareek competes against the short-lived Kurukkal Vipins Mancheri. Seven players including VP Sathyan and IM Vijayan played for India in Vipins. On the other hand, the town team Arikode has Ishaq, Mehboob and Sadiq, who are local children. On that day, the town team became champions in their own country in that game. I still remember going to watch the game.

Sevens football had the feeling of every country, as well as the feeling of my country. The clubs were sponsored by the small financial system of the country. Leaving such a level of play in the 90’s, our sevens is now taking a different route. Football and bullfighting were the two pastimes of Malabar. The current state of sevens football is that both can be seen at the same venue. The game went to the financial level and many new faces came in. There are many new techniques that cannot be celebrated or absorbed. There is no current way of playing natives to natives.
