After Nike developed the super shoes – Vaporfly 4% in 2019, the number of users at the 97th Hakone Station Station reached a new high four years ago in 2021. Among the 210 contestants, 201 were wearing various Nike running shoes, accounting for 95.7%! The data in previous years were 17% in 2017, 28% in 2018, 41% in 2019, and 84% in 2020.
But Nike’s most glorious moment in Hakone Station only lasted for one year. After that, different brands launched carbon sneakers, so the proportion continued to decline from 73.3% in 2022 to 61.9% in 2023.
This year, of the 230 people participating in the Hakone Station, only 98 people wore Nike, accounting for 42.6%. The situation where one brand is dominant no longer exists.
The Japanese brand ASICS is slowly recovering in Hakone Station. In 2017, ASICS was the number one brand in Hakone Station, accounting for 32%, and in 2018 it was 26%. Even though Metaracer was launched in 2020 to compete with Nike’s 4%, in Hakone in 2021, the number of users was 0.
In 2022 and 2023, Pebax was finally used to develop the Metaspeed series, making ASICS reappear in Hakone Station, with 24 and 32 pairs respectively. This year, it was the second most used by 57 people.
Adidas, the third most popular brand, achieved very good results at the Hakone Station this year. Kuroda Asahi and Ota Soio, who are students of Aoyama Gakuin, wore adidas’ latest Adios Pro Evo1 and won consecutive zone awards in the second and third districts. The victory was sealed, with a total of 42 pairs.
PUMA, which set a target of 15 users before the game, met the target with 20 pairs. Whether it can reach the long-term goal of 30% users next year depends on the power of the new shoes. In addition, Josai University, whose team uniforms were sponsored by Puma, ranked third overall, beating favorites such as the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Central University, which is also a very good result for Puma.
Outside of the four major brands, they basically occupy more than 90% of the top three positions in Hakone Station. The only other small brands are On, which won the second place in the third section with Keita Sato of Komazawa University; New Balance was ranked second in the seventh section by Ono. Ryuichiro (Teikyo University) finished second in the third section.
Both of their shoes are models that have not yet been released on the market: On Cloudtri and New Balance FuelCell SuperComp Elite v4.
Putting down the flowers, surprisingly, one person from Under Armor and Brooks each used them.
After selling shoes for more than ten years, I always learn a little bit of knowledge.
