Antibiotics are a major resource in human and veterinary medicine, recalls the National Medicines Safety Agency (ANSM); emphasizing that “better use of them is essential to preserve their effectiveness and fight once morest the resistance mechanisms developed by bacteria”. As part of its actions to promote the proper use of antibiotics, the ANSM, in association with EPI-PHARE, published (July 26) the 7th edition of its report on the evolution of their consumption between 2000 and 2020, in city medicine as in the hospital. The consumption of antibiotics in France remains among the highest in Europe. It should be noted, however, that several periods of significant reduction have been observed over the past twenty years, particularly between 2001 and 2004, following the health insurance campaign “antibiotics , it’s not automatic”, then from 2016 following several interministerial measures to control their use. In 2019, then in 2020 during the first months of the Covid-19 pandemic, a significant drop in the consumption of antibiotics was observed in cities. If the rise of antibiotics since the end of the 1940s has led to a reduction and control of bacterial infections, it has also been accompanied by a reduction in their effectiveness, to the point of generating more and more therapeutic impasses. frequent, sometimes dramatic for patients, in a context of low therapeutic innovation. By avoiding their unnecessary prescription and preserving their effectiveness through proper use, reducing the consumption of antibiotics remains more than ever a priority, explains the ANSM (Link: Consult the report on the consumption of antibiotics – Version July 2023 (26 /07/2023)). Here are some ANSM data. From 2000 to 2019, the evolution of consumption in France was marked by three periods: 2000-2004: significant reduction of 22%; 2005-2016: stabilization (consumption varying by a maximum of ± 7% from one year to the next); 2016-2019: beginning of a new decline: – 8.5%. In the city, there is a privileged use of penicillins such as amoxicillin (+ 18% between 2000 and 2019); a significant decline in cephalosporins (-72% between 2000 and 2019); a sharp drop in the use of fluoroquinolones (-44% between 2000 and 2019); In healthcare establishments: penicillins and cephalosporins are the two most widely used classes of antibiotics; amoxicillin/clavulanic acid is the most commonly used antibiotic; a marked drop in the consumption of antibiotics, – 19% between 2019 and 2020, i.e. as much as the drop recorded over the period 2000 – 2019 (- 20%); a reduction driven by a drop in the most commonly used antibiotics in the community, such as in the hospital: amoxicillin: – 30% in the community and – 16% in the hospital; amoxicillin-clavulanic acid: – 15% in town and – 20% in hospital. As a reminder, antibiotics are ineffective once morest viral infections, including bronchiolitis, influenza, Covid-19, nasopharyngitis and the vast majority of angina and ear infections. Regarding the use of antibiotics, recommendations for the use of professionals-these have been developed by the High Authority for Health (HAS).
