The video where Carlos Villagrán is seen tripping on the steps leading to the stage of a show has unleashed criticism from those who question whether, at 80 years old, the actor is still presenting himself with the character of ‘Kiko’. Although the incident did not escalate.
The actor headlines the show called Kiko’s circus where he sings and does skits. In 2023 he had an international tour in countries such as Peru, Panama, Colombia and the United States. where there is an audience that grew up watching El Chavo del Ocho and they appreciate the characters of the program.
But there is also a sector of viewers who question Villagrán for continuing to be active with a role that has stopped appearing on television since the 80’s alone and since the 70’s together with Roberto Gómez Bolaños: “A genius, but he never got rid of that character.”
There are those who reproach him for taking advantage of an image concept that is not his authorship: “He took advantage of something he didn’t create. He might never be anything without Kiko.” Just as he has fans, the actor has detractors who question his acting quality because since 1973 he has been playing the boy dressed as a sailor who is the son of Doña Florinda.
Interviewed during his lifetime, the deceased Rubén Aguirre declared that he felt sorry for Carlos Villagrán because he might never overcome the success of El Chavo del Ocho and he became trapped in a childlike impersonation that he has squeezed to an advanced age. He regretted that his former partner had not dared to explore other types of projects and characters.
Unlike actors like Edgar Vivar, who has known how to reinvent himself as an actor in films, soap operas and comedy shows, Carlos Villagrán closed all his possibilities to the role that elevated him in the company of Gómez Bolaños, Florinda Meza, María Antonieta de las Nieves, Ramón Valdés, Edgar Vivar and Rubén Aguirre.
It was in 1988 when he stopped appearing on Mexican television following having released Oh what Kiko! in Imevision, a white comedy program that featured the stellar participation of Ramón Valdés, an actor who died on August 9 of that year and whose death influenced the content to stop airing.

Since then he has not appeared on the national small screen once more. Villagrán concentrated exclusively on exploiting Kiko’s character to the maximum, name that he registered in that way because Gómez Bolaños was the owner of the name ‘Quico’. To avoid legal trouble, he also modified his clothing and colors in order to remain visible to people like the infant who exclaims “rabble, rabble.”
“He believed that because he had already succeeded in a group he might succeed alone, but he took a hit in life because he did many programs that were failures. “He didn’t realize that he owed his success to Roberto Gómez Bolaños,” declared Rubén Aguirre regarding the solo career that Villagrán decided to undertake with private shows like Kiko following failing on television following leaving El Chavo del Ocho in 1978.
Villagrán reappeared on television from 2001 to 2005 with his participation in the Venezuelan game show The war of the sexes. He did it by showing himself as Doña Florinda’s son. The only time he has done something different was in 2017 when he joined the cast of the film How to Become the Worst Student in School, a Brazilian comedy directed by Fabricio Bittar. There he plays a strict high school principal.
In 2021 he made the news because he registered as a pre-candidate for the governorship of Querétaro for the Querétaro Independiente (QI) party. He gave up seeking that popularly elected position following the alliance that QI made with the National Action Party (PAN) and the actor was not considered as a contender: “The decision has been made following seeing positive and negative comments regarding my application, allowing me understand that it is not my way.”
Now she is once once more in the spotlight due to a viral stumble and the comments that have been generated to indicate her validity with a character that she might not get rid of since she became known in 1973. While María Antonieta de las Nieves has had attempts to stand out from La Chilindrina with soap operas (Dame chocolate, Dreams and candy), Carlos Villagrán did not want to see beyond Kiko.
