The European Union will send a mission to Armenia with the aim of “building confidence” with Azerbaijan and contributing to the demarcation of the border between the two countries

A joint statement, following discussions between Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, French President Emmanuel Macron and European Council President Charles Michel, on the sidelines of the first summit of the European Political Group in Prague, revealed that the European Union will send a “civilian mission” to Armenia, along the border. with Azerbaijan.

He explained that “the mission will start in October, for a maximum of two months. Its aim is to build confidence, and to contribute, through its reports, to the committees tasked with demarcating borders,” noting that “Armenia agreed to facilitate the establishment of this mission, and Azerbaijan agreed to cooperate with this mission.”

The joint statement stressed that “Armenia and Azerbaijan have confirmed their commitment to the United Nations Charter and the 1991 Alma-Ata Declaration, according to which they mutually recognize their territorial integrity and sovereignty,” noting that “the next meeting of the border demarcation commissions will be held in Brussels by the end of October.”
