The countries of the European Union (EU) agreed this Monday, March 7, to begin the long process of examining the applications for accession of Ukraine, Georgia and Moldovaas announced by the French presidency of the Council of the EU.

Ukraine, facing an invasion by Russia, requested immediate accession, through what it called a “special procedure”, although such a mechanism is not provided for in the rules.

With this agreement, the member countries will now invite the European Commission to submit an opinion on each of the applications submitted by these three countries, to decide whether to grant the status of candidate countries.

In this way, the European Commission will have to rule on each demand separately, in the first step of a long and complex process that in its final chapter requires the unanimous vote of the 27 member states of the bloc.
