European negotiations on remote work will be launched on Tuesday in Brussels, with the aim of drafting directives while the adoption of this practice is “accelerated” due to Covid-19, according to Naila Gleis, head of Eurocadres, the European trade union organization for employees. The negotiations are chaired by representatives of European employers and representatives of the European Union of Trade Unions, in which Eurocadres is participating. The aim is to update the European Convention issued in 2002 on this matter to reach in June the drafting of directives that will be attached to the law of member states within two years, said Gleizes during a press conference at the headquarters of the trade union confederation in Montreuil (Paris region). “What is important to us is that we don’t lose sight of what we found in 2002,” said Gleese, referring to the workers’ “volunteer” principle, the “obligation to negotiate an agreement before starting remote work,” the “employers’ responsibility for health and security,” and “Equipment maintenance,” “Training,” and “The issue of monitoring and data protection.” “It’s also an opportunity to win new rights: a real right to turn off the computer,” and the right for workers’ representatives to use professional email to “stop risks” (feeling isolated, domestic violence), she added.
