The European Parliament recognizes Edmundo González as president of Venezuela

Strasbourg.-The European Parliament has followed in the footsteps of the Spanish Parliament and recognised Venezuelan opposition leader Edmundo González Urrutia as President of Venezuela, despite the refusal of the regime leader Nicolás Maduro to publish the electoral results.

The proposal was presented by the European People’s Party, the largest party in the European Parliament, and promoted in particular by the Spanish Popular Party delegation, which intends to add more pressure to Pedro Sánchez’s Executive. The measure voted on Thursday was approved with 522 votes in favour and 201 against.

Specifically, the approved text recognises González Urrutia as the legitimate and democratically elected president of Venezuela, and María Corina Machado as the leader of the democratic forces in Venezuela. It also calls on all EU Member States to adopt this decision and also asks both the EU and its member countries to issue an international arrest warrant against Nicolás Maduro for crimes against humanity.

So far, no European Union government has formally recognised González Urrutia, but its position has been limited to demanding the results of the electoral minutes, especially after international observation organisations questioned both the results provided by the regime and the electoral procedure.Infobae.
