The European Parliament strongly condemned the murder of Alexei Navalny and fully supported Yulia Navalnaya’s determination to continue her husband’s work. The MEPs emphasized that “all responsibility for his death lies with the Russian state, first of all with its President Vladimir Putin, who must be held accountable.”
The killing of A.Navalno is another sign of increasing and systematic repression in Russia, the MEPs stressed, demanding an independent international investigation into the circumstances of A.Navalno’s death in order to reveal the truth, ensure accountability and fulfill justice.
The resolution emphasizes that the Russian political system is controlled by a consolidated authoritarian regime that is completely corrupt and uses rigged elections to simulate democracy and concentrate all power in the hands of V. Putin.
Stressing that the Russian people must not be confused with the “war-mongering, autocratic and kleptocratic Kremlin regime”, MEPs expressed their solidarity with all individuals in Russia and beyond who, despite targeted brutal repression and severe personal consequences, still find the courage to speak the truth.
By dreaming of a “beautiful Russia of the future”, A. Navalnas embodied the struggle for freedom and democracy, said the members of the EP and called on the EU and its states to continue to show unfailing solidarity with Russia’s independent civil society and democratic opposition and to actively support it. MEPs are also calling on EU countries to do more to find ways to free the most vulnerable prisoners, especially political prisoners who are ill or have been tortured, including the possibility of exchanging prisoners.
MEPs warned that from the beginning of Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 Russian authorities have stepped up their repression of the political opposition, the media and civil society. They condemned the imperialist policies of the Russian regime and called on the EU, its states and like-minded partners around the world to continue to provide political, economic, financial and military support to Ukraine, as this is the best response to the current oppression of the Kremlin regime.
The European Parliament called on the Commission and in particular the European External Action Service to prepare a long-term policy towards Russia that would effectively take into account the realities of today’s EU-Russia relations, the human rights situation in Russia and the need to support Russian civil society and opposition representatives abroad.
The resolution of the European Parliament was supported by 506 MEPs, nine opposed, and 32 abstained.
