The European Parliament approved a single connector for smartphones

The Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection of the European Parliament approved the proposal to adopt the USB Type-C interface as a universal standard for charging devices sold in the European Union.

In a message to site The European Parliament says that the choice of USB-C as a single connector for smartphones will reduce the number of charging accessories sold and will have a positive impact on the environment.

The agency wants the USB Type-C port to become a single standard for all smartphones, tablets, headphones, e-readers, low-power laptops, keyboards, computer mice, headphones, various electronic toys, and smart watches.

One universal charger for mobile phones and other electronic devices will benefit everyone, says MEP Alex Agius Saliba.

The innovation will primarily affect Apple, whose iPhones are equipped with a Lightning port, while most Android phones already use a USB-C connector. Apple has long been protesting once morest the introduction of a single connector, because it does not want to give up an additional source of income. The company itself said that uniform EU regulations on chargers would harm consumers around the world and slow down innovation.
