On March 13, the pan-European rules, also known as the EU Artificial Intelligence Act, were approved. The rules also apply to powerful systems such as ChatGPT (a conversational bot specially trained to understand human language). 523 members of the European Parliament voted for the regulations, 46 voted once morest, 49 abstained.
“The EU has achieved something very important. We have linked the concept of artificial intelligence to the values that underlie our society. However, there is still a lot of work ahead that goes beyond the adopted law. The Artificial Intelligence Law is the beginning of a new model of governance based on technology. Now we must focus on implementing this law in practice,” said Dragos Tudorache from Romania during a debate in the European Parliament.
Internal Market Committee rapporteur Brando Benifei, representing Italy, said an Artificial Intelligence Bureau would be created to help companies start implementing the rules before they come into force.
“We have ensured that the people and values of the EU are at the very center of the development of artificial intelligence,” said Benifei.
EU member states are expected to approve the regulation this spring and it will be published in the Official Journal of the EU in May or June, with implementation starting in 2025.
