The European Union (EU) Foreign Affairs Council will address the situation in Venezuela at its next meeting at Spain’s request, with the aim of providing a unified response, announced the Spanish foreign affairs minister, José Manuel Albares, on Tuesday.
The minister explained in an appearance before the Spanish Senate that he maintains daily contact with the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, with whom he agreed that the Venezuelan crisis will be discussed in that forum, which has scheduled an informal meeting on August 29.
The aim is for the EU to maintain its united position in favour of transparency in the results of the elections in Venezuela and for the democratic will of the Venezuelan people to be respected.
Post-election environment
Following the elections of July 28, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, in power since 2013, was declared the winner for a third term by the National Electoral Council, which has not published the voting records table by table, a result that is rejected by the Venezuelan opposition and a large part of the international community.
In an appearance before the Foreign Affairs Committee, Albares stressed that from the first day after the presidential elections, the Spanish Government has demanded the publication of the electoral records, in its “firm and unwavering commitment to democracy and respect for human rights in Venezuela.”
