Anyone who is serious regarding EU enlargement should first of all clearly name the mistakes that the EU has made in the Balkans over the past decades and then present a new strategy. Because instead of supporting those forces that are democratic, pluralistic and pro-Western, the six potential EU member states have supported ethnonationalist-oriented autocrats in recent years, who are working with Vladimir Putin and Viktor Orbán. You can make good backroom deals with these politicians; they can be blackmailed because they are corrupt. However, this approach by many EU countries has done a great deal of damage to the Western Balkans.
